Train rakes to get facelift at Golden Rock workshop

Exteriors, interiors and toilets of 105 coaches of four rakes of two trains will be upgraded under Project Utkrisht of Indian Railways

Four rakes of two trains are set to get a makeover at Golden Rock workshop in Tiruchi under the Indian Railway’s Project Utkrisht to revamp the exterior and interior of express trains across the country in phases.

The Southern Railway, after getting approval from the Railway Board, has entrusted the 85-year-old Golden Rock workshop with the task of upgrading the coaches of Train No. 12663 Tiruchi- Howrah Express and Train No. 16315 Kochuveli - Bengaluru City Express.

A railway official said here on Friday that the Golden Rock workshop has been allotted four rakes comprising 105 coaches of the two trains.

As a pilot measure, the workshop, which is already engaged in periodic overhaul of diesel locomotives and passenger coaches, has turned out the first coach with new features under Project Utkrisht. The makeover had been done in the interior and exterior and inside the toilets.

The coach has been been given a fresh coat of high-quality polyurethane paintg on the exteriors with a new colour scheme. The coach has been provided LED lighting with PVC flooring. High- quality vinyl wrapping had been done on the doorway and gangway inside the coach on a single colour scheme.

Other features are: epoxy flooring in toilets for better long life and aesthetics; provision of health faucet in toilets and bio-tanks fitted with S-traps; provision of LED lights, stainless steel dustbins and venturi type ventilation system inside toilets, as per recommendations of Research Designs and Standards Organisation of the Indian Railways. The objective is to provide better comfort to the passengers.

The workshop carries out periodic overhaul of over 1,000 passenger coaches and more than 120 diesel locomotives every year.The rake upgradation work is expected to be completed by the end of this fiscal the officer said.

The workshop has received one LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coach as a pilot project for periodic overhaul prior to carrying out the work on a mass scale. The LHB coach rakes are being used in Tiruchi - Chennai Rockfort Express and Madurai - Chennai Pandyan Express.
