The State government has issued an order for implementation of water supply improvement scheme to the newly-added areas of Tiruchirapalli City Corporation with the financial assistance of the German Development Bank. The project will cost Rs. 63.70 crore. While the German bank will contribute Rs. 25.48 crore (40 per cent) as loan and an equal sum as grant, the corporation will contribute Rs. 12.74 crore (20 per cent) from its general fund. Areas such as Paapakurichi, Kattur, Ellakudi, Aalathur, and Keelakalkandarkottai village panchayats and Thiruverumbur town panchayat, which were added to Corporation in 2011, will benefit from the new supply scheme.
It will facilitate the civic body to supply 135 litres per capita a day (lpcd) as per the corporation norm from 40 lpcd and 58 lpcd provided under Rural and Town Panchayat norms. It will benefit a population of about 88,000. The project is planned to meet the requirement of projected population in 2013.
As per the project, a new source will be created in the Cauvery between Kambarasampettai Head Works and first Collector well for Combined Water Supply Scheme to Ramanathapuram. The existing Collector well for Golden Rock will be utilised as an additional source after rehabilitation. Three vertical turbine pump sets of 150 Horse Power will be created near Ganapathy Nagar. The yield will be about 6 MLD.
M. Vijayalakshmi, corporation Commissioner, told The Hindu that all five wards, from 61 to 65, which were added to the Corporation, would benefit. Steps had been taken for preparing technical documents to call for tender, which would be floated in November or December.
