The Thamizhaga Cauvery Vivasayigal Sangam (TCVS) has called upon the State government to renovate the damaged District Livestock Farm at Korukkai near Thiruthuraipoondi.
The farm sustained extensive damage in Gaja cyclone and claimed the lives of a dozen cattle, TCVS general secretary P. R. Pandian said.
Talking to reporters at Thiruthuraipoondi on Thursday, Mr.P andian said that it was unfortunate to note that the farm still remained in a battered state even after 12 months. The farm serves as a breeding ground for the famous ‘Umbalachery’ breed cattle and around 2,000 cattle heads were reared at this farm spread over 500 acres.
At present, the farm is left with just 500 cattle heads. Almost all the sheds were torn apart in the cyclone. The sheds where cattle feeds were stored remain damaged, he added.
Stating that several coconut farmers have been left out in the list of beneficiaries announced by the government, Mr. Pandian urged the government to consider inclusion of 40 lakh coconut trees which were not enumerated for the reason that they were not included in the `adangal’ and release the compensation amount to the farmers.
Similarly, the sangam also demanded crop insurance compensation for the paddy raised in all the villages be released immediately.
