DREU flays corruption in railway society

Published - December 13, 2011 02:52 pm IST - TIRUCHI:

Members of the Dakshin Railway Employees Union (DREU) staged a demonstration here on Monday condemning the “large-scale corruption” in the Southern Railway Employees Cooperative Credit Society functioning here.

Alleging that the shares of the workers were being looted in various ways, the DREU members sought the intervention of the Central and State governments on the issue since the society came under the Multi-State Cooperative Act and demanded a CBI inquiry into corruption in the society.

A group of DREU members carrying union flags came in a procession from Tiruchi Junction and staged a demonstration in front of the society office located near the Aristo junction in support of their demands.

The demonstrators were led by the DREU divisional president K.Venkatesan. The district secretary of the CITU Raja also took part in the demonstration.

The DREU members demanded that the system of government audit be implemented to check corruption since large-scale corruption was being hidden through audit by a private agency.

They also want to stop the recruitment of new clerks after obtaining bribes. They said the number of shareholders in the society had reduced from 61,000 to 45,000.

Disbursement of consumer loans through cheques and grant of interest-free education loan were among their other demands. Moments before the DREU members staged a demonstration; railway employees attached to the Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU) highlighted the achievements of the society inside the campus.

The demonstrating DREU members sat on the Tiruchi – Dindigul road in front of the society raising slogans in support of their demands.
