The 90-year-old bridge across the Coleroon River in Tiruchi collapsed during the early hours on Sunday.

It had developed a crack on the 18th pier a few days ago due to heavy water current in the Coleroon.

According to an eyewitness, a portion of the steel girder bride between the 18th and 19th piers collapsed around 2 a.m on Sunday.

The bridge was abandoned about three years ago since the opening of a new bridge. Traffic continues as usual on the new bridge.
