An aged couple allegedly committed suicide by drowning themselves in the Cauvery river at Srinivasanallur village near Thottiyam in the district on Sunday. The bodies of M. Thangaraj, 75, and his wife T. Thangammal, 70, were later recovered and sent for post mortem to the Musiri Government Hospital.
Police sources said Thangaraj and his wife had been staying with their only daughter at Arur village near Mohanur in neighbouring Namakkal district.
Sources said the aged couple decided to end their lives reportedly due to ill health as well as their poor economic condition. Their daughter's economic condition too was not sound prompting the couple to take the extreme step.
The aged couple came to Srinivasanallur - the native village of Thangaraj - where they entered the Cauvery river and drowned. Locals who were taking bath in the river noticed the act of the couple but could not rescue them as they had drowned by then.
The bodies were later retrieved and sent for post mortem. The Thottiyam Police has registered a case under section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
