August 05, 2010 06:26 pm | Updated 06:44 pm IST - TIRUCHI:

Six middle schools in the district identified for upgrading of infrastructure and faculty strength under Rastriya Madhyamik Siksha Abhiyan (RMSA) will witness commencement of construction work shortly. The scheme aims to achieve universal access and quality secondary education.

These schools figure among 200 middle schools in the State chosen for development under the Central scheme during the course of the year. They are located in Inam Mathur village in Manikandam panchayat union, Oonayur and Vembanur in Marungapuri union, Kanakiliyanur in Pullambadi union, Kuruvampatti in Mannachanallur union and Koppanpatti in Uppiliapuram union. Needy institutions were identified for the scheme, the chief educational officer T. Mohanakumar said. A specified number of schools from each district will be identified for the next four years under the scheme.

For each school, a sum of Rs. 58.12 lakh will be spent for construction of four classrooms and rooms for headmaster, library, office, science laboratory, art and craft laboratory.

The project will include provision of drinking water and creation of lavatory facilities.

Additional faculty of six graduate teachers (inclusive of school head) and a physical education teacher per school are likely to be appointed within a couple of weeks.

The facilities will be created in six months time since the project will be executed by the Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation, the CEO said. Delays in execution of building projects were perceptible when additional classrooms were constructed under Sarva Siksha Abhiyan through the respective Village Education Committees.

In the meantime, Std. IX has been started in temporary rooms in the respective schools. Teachers deputed from other schools are handling classes, he said. Thanks to the scheme, teachers to handle Tamil, English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies are appointed at the same time.

Usually , in the event of starting secondary classes in a middle school only the post of headmasters and a graduate teacher are sanctioned initially.

According to the RMSA Coordinator S. Subramanian, the construction plan will be common for all the six schools. The space for construction has been earmarked in these schools, he said.
