It is not every day that a family gets to see a bullet piercing the roof of their home and landing in the living room.

Ramaswamy and family of Vilavoorkal, near Malayinkeezhu, however, are yet to recover from the fright that such a bullet gave them on Saturday.

According to Vinesh Kumar, sub-inspector, Malayinkeezhu, it was around 9.30 a.m. on Saturday that the bullet pierced the roof of a side-room of the house and landed in the living room. Though most of the five-member family were around, the bullet landed safely on the floor.

“In any case, even if it struck someone, it did not apparently have the force to cause a serious injury. It appears to have been from a long distance,” Mr. Kumar said.

The family, and the local people, allege that the bullet came from the Indian Army’s firing range at Mookkunnimala. “We are not sure of from where it came. That is what the local people say. We are contacting the Army officials and also the Indian Air Force station nearby,” the SI said, adding that though local residents complained that such stray bullets were becoming regular, there were no reported incidents in the recent past.

“We had a case of such a stray bullet around three years ago. But nothing after that,” he said, adding that the Malayinkeezhu police had registered a case under Section 102 of the CrPC and were investigating. Mr. Kumar said that ballistic experts had collected evidence from the spot and were trying to ascertain from where the solitary bullet came. A report was expected in a week, he added.
