The government will convene an all-party meeting during the forthcoming Assembly session to decide on facilitating voting by non-resident Indians (NRIs) in the ensuing elections to local bodies and to overcome the hurdles to laying a pipeline of Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) in the State.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Wednesday that the two issues could not be taken up at an all-party meeting held on Wednesday owing to lack of time.
“We have decided to call another all-party meeting during the ensuing Assembly session,” he said. The Chief Minister said the Election Commission had sought a consensus among political parties on voting for NRIs although the relevant Acts were amended.
On the laying of pipeline for GAIL, Mr. Chandy said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is following up the project and is putting pressure on the State for completing the work as it was causing heavy loss to GAIL and the units in Mangaluru. ‘Whenever I call on him, he is asking about the progress of laying the pipeline for the GAIL project,” he added.
