: He is qualified for a high-profile job to make a good living. But Subid K S, who holds a BTech in civil engineering from Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, Kottayam and a Master’s in Industrial and Product Design from IIT, Delhi, decided to follow his heart by making toys out of simple materials, which one would normally dump as trash, as a way to make children more creative.
After leaving a lucrative job in Mumbai four years ago, Mr Subid, a resident of Thrissur, decided to do something differently that would give him “satisfaction and a sense of purposefulness.” After getting exhausted of considering various options, he decided to take training in toy making under the guidance of Arvind Gupta, a pioneer in making toys out of ordinary stuff. “I consider him my guru and the websitewww.arvindguptatoys.commy manual,” he told The Hindu.
Subid started experimenting with newspaper, thread, plastic bottle, safety pins, used straw and calendars to make paper puppets, table spinning tops made of pet bottles, flutes made of straw and magic paper wands. He named the toys thus made as Ahimsa Toys. He then decided to impart his skills to children in various schools. Subid was in the city to participate in a training class at Government Lower Primary School at Karichara.
“My vision is to build a world where people are respected for their social values and where children are empowered not by mere degree but by good principles and creativity,” he said.
