Leading engineering consulting firms of the country are in the race to bag technical consultancy for flyovers at the busy junctions of Sreekaryam, Ulloor, and Pattom along the National Highway 66 in the capital city.

Eight firms have responded to the e-bids floated by the Kerala Rapid Transit Corporation Ltd. (KRTL), the special purpose vehicle set up to execute the proposed Light Metro in the cities of Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode that has been tasked with the work on the flyovers.

The eight firms have submitted the technical and financial bids and the evaluation of the technical bids by KRTL has commenced, official sources told The Hindu . The financial bids of those who qualify technically will be opened to award the work of the design and tenders for its construction. The selection will be ‘cost-based and quality’ and the consultant will get three months, the official said.

STUP Consultants Chennai; L&T Infrastructure Engineering Ltd, Chennai; Shrikhande Consultants, Mumbai; Feedback Infra Pvt Ltd Gurgaon; COS Consultant Services Madurai; Accrete Consulting Engineers Pvt Ltd, Gurgaon; Velciti Consulting Engineers Pvt Ltd, Chennai; and SoWiL Ltd, Noida, are the firms in the race.

Proposed MRTS

Open tendering is to be adopted instead of the earlier turnkey mode decided for executing the work. The flyovers are to enable the movement of proposed MRTS along with vehicular traffic of the NH 66.

The KRTL came into the picture following the exit of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s (DMRC) from the Light Metro proposed on 35.12 km in the two cities. This was in the wake of the reluctance of the government to sign turnkey consultancy agreement for the preparatory works.

The drawings for the three flyovers were prepared under DMRC Principal Adviser E. Sreedharan and the government has asked the KRTL to stick to the alignment and approved drawings of the DMRC.

The Social Impact Assessment (SIA) carried out by the Centre for Advanced Research in Health and Human Behaviour (CARB) has recommended acquiring 1.343 hectares for the 480-m flyover at Sreekaryam.

The expert committee report on the SIA for the 443-m flyover at Ulloor carried out by Institution for Rural Development (IRD) is with the District Collector.
