Manoj M. Mallya, a student of Indrali English Medium High School, Udupi, who is among the 12 students in the State who scored 623 out of 625 in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination, said on Monday that he wants to join an IIT and become an engineer.

The son of Madhukar Mallya, a professor, and Jayashri S., an employee of LIC, Manoj told The Hindu that he was excited with his marks. He used to study for four to five hours a day and did not take any coaching.

“My success in the SSLC exams is due to the support and encouragement of parents and teachers,” he said.

Manoj, who chose PCMS, and is now studying at the Poornaprajna Pre-University College, Udupi, said he would prefer to take Electronics and Communications.

Hobbies

His hobbies are reading, watching television and philately.
