Eminent scientist and former Director of Indian Institute of Science Goverdhan Mehta called upon the Governor to safeguard the autonomy of University and protect them from political and bureaucratic meddling.

He also asked the Governor to be the protector and promoter of quality in higher education.

“… On an earlier occasion, I had the opportunity to request you (Governor) Sir to safeguard the autonomy of university and protect them from any political and bureaucratic meddling,” said Professor Mehta, adding, “as Chancellor, please also be the protector and promoter of quality in higher education institutions in the State,” he said in his address at the 33rd Annual Convocation here on Wednesday.

Professor Mehta said though ensuring quality education was primary responsibility of the University and the rate of expansion witnessed in the past decade has severely compromised with the ability of the Universities to maintain and ensure quality.

“Endemic shortage of faculty and learning process, mindless proliferation of courses, dwindling infrastructure, inadequate budgetary support, indifferent leadership and governance deficit in general had a crippling effect on quality of education. The repeated mention in various for that less than 20 per cent of our graduates are employable is not without substance,” he said.
