Former IISc director chosen for honorary doctorate

It will be conferred on them by the Governor Vajubhai Vala at the 33rd annual convocation of the university on Wednesday.

Renowned scientist Goverdhan Mehta, industrialist Shashi Kiran Shetty and educationist B.V.R Chowdari have been chosen by Mangalore University for its honorary doctorate for 2015.

It will be conferred on them by the Governor Vajubhai Vala at the 33rd annual convocation of the university on Wednesday.

K. Byrappa, Vice-Chancellor, told presspersons here on Tuesday that Mr. Mehta had made significant contribution to organic chemistry.

He was the former director of the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad.

He is the recipient of Padma Shri. Currently, he is the national research professor at the University of Hyderabad.

Mr. Shetty, hailing from B.C. Road, is the founder and executive chairman of Allcargo Logistics Ltd. He is an alumnus of Mangalore University.

Employees

As a multinational venture it has employed about 8,500 people with 200 offices in 90 countries.

He has launched Avashya Foundation in India for social welfare schemes encompassing national disaster relief, health care, education, sports, women empowerment and environment sustainability. Mr. Chowdari is the executive director of India Research Initiatives for fostering collaborative research between the National University of Singapore and universities and institutes of higher learning in India.

Training

The India-Singapore initiative has so far facilitated the training of more than 1,000 Indian students at different laboratories of National University of Singapore.

He said that 23,385 candidates, including undergraduate and postgraduate, are eligible to receive degrees in the convocation. Of them, 1,315 candidates would receive them in person on Wednesday. Of the total candidates eligible, 88 would receive their Ph.D. degrees. There will be 37 gold medals and 63 cash prizes.

Of the total candidates 65.13 per cent are women and remaining men.

Of the total candidates 4579 were postgraduate students and 18,716 were undergraduate students.
