A road connecting Bairampally with Perdoor caved in due to heavy rain at Bairampally in Udupi district on Tuesday, while four houses and 40 acres of paddy fields have been damaged in the same area.
As the road caved in, the authorities have closed it for traffic. The road, which passed on a small bridge, called the Annalu Bridge, had caved in barely 100 metres from the bridge.
Udupi Tahsildar Pradeep Kurdekar said that not just road but also the culvert had been washed away. The road was built over this culvert, constructed several years ago.
A small stream called Annalu flows nearby. There was a downpour for about an hour in the village resulting in this damage, he said.
Additional Deputy Commissioner B. Sadashiva Prabhu said that the road had been closed now. Immediate restoration of the road might not be possible because the depth was approximately 20 feet to 25 feet, he said.

The Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD) and other officers had visited the spot. The PWD had been told to submit a report on the damage, Mr. Prabhu said.
The people of Bairampally will have to go via Harikhandige to reach Perdoor till the road was repaired. “Floods should subside to build any temporary road in the damaged area in Bairampally,” Mr. Kurdekar said.
About 40 acres of paddy fields had been damaged in Bairampally due to rain, while four houses were partially damaged in the nearby village of Kukkehalli. Low -lying areas were flooded in this region. A cow died in a lightning strike in Karje village in Brahmavar taluk.
