Having failed to notice any change in motorists as far as wearing helmets was concerned, though cases have been booked, the Dakshina Kannada police on Wednesday started a week-long drive offering roses to offenders and make them comply with the rule.
The drive on Wednesday was conducted by the police in Puttur town and on the Bantwal-Mysuru Highway in Sampya.
The Puttur Rural Police brought about 100 roses in the morning and started giving it to motorists riding their vehicles on the highway without helmets. “We have been booking cases for the last few weeks and collecting fine. Last month 300 cases were booked and ₹ 1 lakh fine was collected. But there is no change among motorists,” said Abdul Khader, Sub-Inspector of Puttur Rural Police. On the direction of Superintendent of Police Bhushan Gulabrao Borase, the police have started this drive.
“At least this might prompt motorists to abide by the rules,” Mr. Khader said. While 50 roses were given away in the morning, the remaining roses were given during the drive in the evening at Sampya. A similar exercise was carried out by the Puttur Town Traffic Police.
Mr. Borase said that a similar drive was held soon after the Supreme Court judgment making helmets compulsory for pillion riders. The drive will be held across the district in the next seven days, he said.
