Jogan Shankar is VC of Kuvempu University

Jogan Shankar, a senior professor of Sociology at Mangalore University, has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University, Shivamogga.

He has joined the list of Vice-Chancellors produced by the 34-year-old Mangalore University. M.R. Gajendragad, who was a professor of Chemistry at Mangalore University, was the first Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University in 1990s. Mr. Shankar, who is currently the chairman of the Department of Sociology at the university, has 22 years of teaching experience. Mr. Shankar served as founder co-ordinator of Vimochana, a voluntary organisation which was responsible for rehabilitation of Devadasi women and their children.

He was honoured with the Karnataka State award in 1992 and a national award in 1993 for his significant contribution to welfare of marginalised women and children. Speaking to The Hindu, he said, “I am happy and elated.” He said that he would give stress on introducing new courses and research.
