R. Chinmay loves playing cricket, but he had to keep that interest aside for two years to focus on getting a seat in one of the Indian Institutes of Technology. Bhuvan V.B. loves doing portraits, but he could not work on them as his focus was on getting a seat at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

Mr. Chinmay and Mr. Bhuvan, from Expert Pre-University College, Valachil, Mangaluru, are among the top performers from Mangaluru in the Common Entrance Test (CET), the results of which were announced on Saturday.

Mr. Chinmay is ranked second in the Engineering stream and third in the Pharmacy stream. Mr. Bhuvan is ranked second in B.Sc. (Agriculture) and sixth in Bachelor in Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences.

Mr. Chinmay, the youngest of two sons of Ravishankar, assistant GM of Karnataka State Seeds Corporation, and homemaker Sudha, wants to be a scientist and intends to realise this dream at an IIT.

He is now preparing for the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) scheduled on Monday. While hoping to pursue his undergraduate course in Computer Science, Mr. Chinmay says he is keeping his options open on pursing a career in basic sciences. He points to his qualification in the Kishore Vaigynik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) examination that assures him a seat at the Indian Institute of Science.

Mr. Bhuvan, who was ranked 84th in KVPY, said studying at IISc is his plan B, in case he does not get a seat at AIIMS. “It is a different entrance examination where questions are also on current affairs and aptitude. I am fully prepared,” said a confident Mr. Bhuvan, the eldest of two children of B.M. Veera Gowda and Leena Gowda, both professors at Veterinary College in Bengaluru. Saying that his dream is to become a doctor, Mr. Bhuvan said he has prepared himself mentally to stay away from parents and keep aside his interest in art.

Samarth Mayya, who is ranked fifth in the engineering stream, hopes to become a pilot. Mr. Mayya, the eldest of two sons of businessman Satish B. Mayya and homemaker Sriradha, hopes to do well in the JEE (Advanced) and get a seat in an IIT. He is also writing the entrance exam of BITS Pilani.

The other top rank holders from the region include Sudesh Gowda J. and Yash Bannur from Expert PU College, ranked seventh and ninth, respectively, in B.Sc (Agriculture) stream. S. Darshansamartha from Alva’s PU College, Moodbidri, is ranked 10th in the same stream.
