Campaign against golf course, resort

June 04, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - MANGALURU:

The Bengre unit of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) will hold a signature campaign on June 5 opposing the proposed golf course and luxury resort on the seashore as well as to demand occupancy certificates for the residents of Bengre.

The signature campaign will be held near Bengre Kadavu, at 4.30 p.m. on June 5.

DYFI Bengre president A.B. Naushad in a release here said that residents of Kudroli Bengre, Kasaba Bengre and Tota Bengre would lose their touch with the sea once the just-commenced work on construction of protective sea wall is completed.

The ultimate aim of the government appears to be completely evicting Bengre residents terming them as ‘illegal’ occupants, he alleged.

Mr. Naushad wondered while the government dithers from providing basic amenities to the residents citing Coastal Regulatory Zone norms, the same government is allowing the golf course and luxury resort on the seashore. Government policies have always favoured the rich, he alleged.

He said if the golf course and resort came up in Bengre, it would severely affect fishing activities in the region.
