There is no need for Mangaluru residents to search for institutes to upgrade their skills in tailoring, computer soft skills, repair of electronic gadgets and candle making. The newly opened Mangaluru Livelihood Centre will provide this and a host of other services if they register their names by paying ₹ 100.
Upgrading skills to the requirements of the industry is among the facilities that will be available at the Mangaluru City Corporation’s Livelihood Centre, which started functioning at the community hall, near Urwa Market, on Monday. It is among the few city livelihood centres being set up in the State under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission.
Achyutah Naik, manager of skill development, who is overseeing the functioning of the centre, said that the centre would help labour find jobs. Those registered with the centre would be referred to potential employers, who too would be registered on payment of ₹ 1,000. Wayside hawkers, who are registered with the centre, would get help to find customers for their vegetables. All these services would be available for those who have been residing in the city for more than three years.
Mr. Naik said that Samartha City Level Federation of Self Help Groups would run the centre. The federation would help registered members enrol for Aadhaar. The centre plans to develop an app and digitalise its operation, he said.
Inaugurating the centre, Mayor Harinath said that the civic administration was committed to creating jobs for the unemployed and alleviate poverty. Corporation commissioner Mohammed Nazeer, councillors Shashidhar Hegde, Kavita Sanil, Roopa D. Bangera and Radhakrishna were present.
