Undergraduate students of Mangalore University should compulsorily have 75 per cent attendance in each subject in a semester if they want to sit for examinations from 2015-16. The 75 per cent attendance rule, as an eligibility for exams, stands even now but students, lacking attendance, can pay a condonation fee. The academic council of the university in its meeting on Tuesday withdrew the condonation provision making attendance mandatory.
The decision has been taken due to a Supreme Court directive.
The Union government had constituted a committee, under the chairmanship of J.M. Lyngdoh, to examine and recommend aspects about the student body and the student union elections in universities, colleges and other institutions of higher education.
The committee had submitted its report to the apex court, which in its order on September 22, 2006, had directed that the recommendations should be followed in all colleges and universities.
The council also approved to reserve one seat for sports, NCC, NSS, cultural activities, Scouts and Guides and Employee quota in each post-graduate course during admission for 2015-16.
Currently, only one seat has been reserved for admission to each post-graduate course in the NCC, NSS and sports quota.
The council approved syllabi revised for post-graduation courses in Chemsitry, Applied Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry.
Vice-Chancellor K. Byrappa presided over the meeting.
