Corporation Commissioner V. P. Jayaseelan inaugurating the open drainnage desilting machine at Thoothukudi corporation office on Friday.

The open drainage desilting machine, which has been procured at a cost of ₹30 lakh for desilting the drainage channels before the start of north-east monsoon, was commissioned by Commissioner V. P. Jayaseelan on Friday.

The machine, procured under the ‘Swachch Bharat Mission’, is being used to desilt the open drainage channels across the city.

Since this heavy equipment can be fitted with buckets in three sizes, it can be used for all types of drainage channels. Moreover, the desilted waste can be directly loaded in the container provided for the purpose instead of heaping it on the roadside that would cause health hazards.

“It will further fine-tune the sanitary operations in the city,” Mr. Jayaseelan said.
