With an aim to eradicate child labour in any form or place – irrespective of hazardous or non-hazardous – the officials of the Department of Labour organised street plays, signature campaigns and awareness programmes in association with the public and NGOs here on Monday.
June 12 is being observed as Anti-child Labour Day across the nation.
In line with this, the State government organised a number of events by involving NGOs, students, homemakers and also public to prevent and eradicate child labour in all districts, taluks and cities.
A five-day event began on Monday with street plays enacted at Periyar bus stand, Arapalayam bus stand, which drew a large crowd.
Meeting
Collector L. Subramanian, who convened a meeting with all senior officials appealed to them to make the district a “child labour free district.”
Joint Commissioner of Labour Saravanan, Deputy Commissioner Radhakrishnanpandian inaugurated the campaign in which Inspector of Labour J. Kalidas, Child Line Nodal Director Premalatha participated.
Checks
During the next two days, the officials have planned to conduct checks in different pockets, where children were employed.
A massive anti-child labour pledge would also be administered as part of the campaign on the culminating day (June 12) at Periyar bus stand in which a large number of school and college students are expected to participate, the officials added.
