Six killed as share auto, truck collide near Usilampatti

MADURAI

In an accident involving a share autorickshaw and a truck, six persons were killed and four others injured near Usilampatti in the district on Friday.

Police said the share auto was proceeding towards Elumalai from Usilampatti around 3.30 p.m., when the truck, which was coming in the opposite direction, collided with it.

The deceased were identified as Ashok, 40, auto driver, Murugan, 45, Muthulakshmi, 50, Vasiyammal, 39, Sathya, 30, and Guruvammal, 40, all from Elumalai. Preliminary inquiries revealed that they were all casual workers.

They were returning from Usilampati after purchasing new clothes for Deepavali, a police officer said.

The police sent the bodies to Usilampatti Government Hospital for post-mortem. They said two children – one aged five and the other seven – were among the injured, who have been admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai.

Usilampatti police are investigating.
