Thoothukudi

With the deployment of around 2,500 police personnel in various parts of Thoothukudi, security has been strengthened ahead of protests called by the Anti-Sterlite Movement here on Tuesday. The members of the movement are scheduled to besiege the Collectorate on Tuesday, demanding the closure of Sterlite Copper unit.

Barricades were put up at the entry of Collectorate to prevent any protester from barging into the Collectorate, sources said here on Monday.

The protesters had abruptly split apart as difference of opinion occurred among them. While a group of protesters from various villages, including A. Kumareddiyapuram, had decided to launch the besiege protest at Collectorate, a section of traders were planning to organise a protest demonstration on SAV school grounds here.

However, the police granted permission to hold a demonstration on the school grounds. But, the protesters should not cause disturbance to the public, sources said.
