M.V. Muthuramalingam, Chairman, Velammal Educational Trust, awarded scholarships to 68 school toppers across the southern districts of the State, at Velammal College of Engineering and Technology in Viraganoor here on Friday.

Scholarships worth ₹ 25,000 were awarded to each student who has scored above 90% and is from economically weaker sections of the society.

“I am extremely happy to receive the scholarship. I am from a middle class family and ₹25,000 is a huge amount for us. It will cover my tuition fee for the next two semesters,” said E. Mohanalogapriya, who studied at Vellivethiyar Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School.

C. Devadarshini, one of the toppers from Masathiyar Corporation School, said that she will use the scholarship money to cover her enrollment expenses for the TNEA counselling.

Velammal Community Service, a voluntary initiative floated by the trust, had identified toppers from Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Pudukottai.

“By sponsoring for the education of students, we contribute to the development of the society,” said Mr. Muthuramalingam.

Velammal Community Service has also planned to offer coaching classes for poor students studying in government and corporation schools in these districts to write competitive examinations such as NEET, JEE and UPSC.

“We are planning to conduct an orientation programme for the commerce students across the corporation schools,” said N. Ganesh Natrajan, vice-chairman, Velammal Group of Institutions.
