A proposal has been submitted seeking Rs. 47-crore for the Madurai-based Centre for Research in Medical Entomology (CRME) complex which is coming up here with advanced facilities for scientific research in vector borne diseases.
A detailed project report has been submitted to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) about two weeks ago with design of proposed buildings and specific requirements prepared by the Central Public Works Department which will undertake the construction work.
Five acres of land has been allotted by the State Government at Vadapalanji near here and the foundation stone for the new campus was laid in July 2010 by ICMR Director General V. M. Katoch who had then declared that CRME deserves to be a national level research laboratory.
“Based on CPWD estimates, we have asked for Rs.47-crore for civil works and associated infrastructure in our upcoming new campus. Expenditure and Finance Committee approval papers were submitted to ICMR and the final approval is awaited,” B. K. Tyagi, Director, CRME, told “The Hindu” on Tuesday.
The sprawling campus of CRME, which is closr to Madurai Kamaraj University, will have well-equipped laboratories for dedicated research in vector-borne diseases, animal house, staff quarters and guest houses among other things. Dr.Tyagi said that more laboratory equipment would be procured once the laboratories formally move in to the new campus.
“We will also retain the existing labs and office at Sarojini Street in Chinna Chokkikulam in the city where we are now positioned. This facility can be used for specific research projects,” he added. Besides, in the Twelfth Plan, the CRME is hoping to get more manpower particularly recruiting new scientists.
