Divisional Railway Manager Sunil Kumar Garg on Wednesday flagged off a cleanliness awareness rally at Madurai railway junction to mark the Passenger and Customer Facilitation Fortnight being observed by the Indian Railway between May 26 and June 9.
Briefing about the fortnight, the DRM said that the railway would conduct punctuality drives, catering and ticket checking drives, road shows for passengers, safety campaigns at level crossings, safety seminars and yoga and health camps at various railway stations.
Stating that a railway technical employee was killed in a recent accident in Tirunelveli, Mr. Garg said that the fortnight would also be used to create awareness among the railway employees of their safety. The employee who had climbed up a locomotive to check batteries was electrocuted to death when he came in contact with high voltage power supply from the overhead equipment.
In the presence of Additional Divisional Railway Manager R.V.B. Babu, the DRM inaugurated a photo exhibition on various aspects of cleaning and pest control measures – yard rodent control, glue trap pest control, cockroaches and bed-bugs control, onboard house-keeping services – being adopted by the railways.
The railway would also renew its efforts to replace more number of level crossings with limited use subways or road overbridges during the year. As many as 45 level crossings had been closed in this manner in the division during the last two years, he added.
