MADURAI

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday stayed lower court proceedings initiated against DMK MLA I. Periyasamy for his alleged remarks against police.

Justice N. Anand Venkatesh granted the interim stay against the proceedings currently in the file of Nilakottai Judicial Magistrate. He was booked by Nilakottai police under Sections 189 (threat of Injury to public servant), 290 (public nuisance), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 505 (public mischief) of the IPC.

I.Periyasamy is said to have made the remarks at a public meeting in Nilakottai in Dindigul district in 2014. He claimed that the speech did not disturb public tranquillity as claimed by the prosecution. He said a false case has been foisted against him out of political vengeance.
