MADURAI

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tiruchi, to transfer the Inspector of Police of Velayuthampalayam police station for failing to take appropriate action against those involved in illegal quarrying in Manmangalam in Karur district.

A Division Bench of Justices K.K. Sasidharan and P.D. Audikesavalu, which was hearing a contempt petition filed by C. Rajkumar, a resident of Manmangalam, against the failure of authorities to curb illegal quarrying, issued the direction to the DIG. It also instructed the official to keep the Inspector away from Karur.

The court further directed that an inquiry be conducted against those involved in illegal sand quarrying and an action taken report be filed by November 20.

Earlier, the court had directed Karur district authorities to constitute a special team and conduct inspections to prevent illegal sand quarrying in Manmangalam. Since there was no tangible action on the court’s direction, the contempt petition was filed before the court.
