Gang involved in robbery busted

The district police have busted a narikurava (gypsy) gang, which was involved in robbery, house break and theft cases in Paramakudi region during the last few months and recovered from it, about 30 sovereigns of gold jewels.

Acting on the orders of Superintendent of Police Omprakash Meena, a special team arrested the five-member gang, which included four narikuravas after raiding their hide-out in Theni district recently.

After series of burglaries in Paramakudi and nearby areas, the SP had formed a special team, headed by Ramasubramani, Sub Inspector, Paramakudi Taluk police station, which busted the gang after arresting a suspect in Parakamudi on July 28.

The team detained Karumalayan, 45, a narikurava, who was moving in a suspicious manner near Ottapalam bus stand. On interrogation, he confessed to the police of committing the crimes – three robberies, six burglaries and few thefts along with his accomplices.

Based on the information provided by him, the special team arrested Iyappan, 20 and Kannan alias Velikannan, 32, both narikuravas, hailing from Tiruvalluvar Colony, Cumbum, in Theni district, one Hakkim Raja from Chinnamanur in Theni district and another accused, Kumar, 20, a narikurava from Balan Nagar in Paramakudi, police said.

The gang usually targeted locked houses, the police said.

The special team faced resistance from the local community at Tiruvalluvar Colony when it went to arrest Iyappan and Kannan. After beating a retreat, the team visited the colony again and arrested the accused.

The accused were produced before a Magistrate court and remanded in judicial custody, police said.

Parakamudi police had also arrested one M. Banupriya, 30, on August 5 in connection with two theft cases and recovered from her five and a half sovereign gold jewels, police said.
