Hearing a batch of petitions that sought a direction to ensure restoration of green cover along national and State highways in the State, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court sought a response from the State.

A Division Bench of Justices T.S. Sivagnanam and R. Tharani sought to know from the State if a helpline could be created to receive complaints of indiscriminate felling of trees. State could also look at the feasibility of replanting them elsewhere during implementation of road projects, the court said.

The court also sought to know about enactment of the Trees Act in the State, so that there would be a monitoring mechanism to protect trees from unauthorised felling.
