The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday allowed former Minister V. Senthil Balaji to stage hunger strike at three places in Karur district. He had sought permission to stage hunger strike claiming that numerous public welfare schemes were not implemented in the region.

Justice N. Anand Venkatesh, hearing the plea of Mr. Senthil Balaji, allowed him to stage hunger strike at K. Paramathi, Velayuthampalayam and Aravakurichi. The hunger strike at these places has been planned to be held on September 25, September 27 and October 4 respectively.

The former Minister, in this petition, said when he contested from Aravakurichi Assembly constituency in 2016, he had promised the people of the region that various welfare schemes would be implemented. However, following his disqualification from the Assembly membership, the State government failed to ensure that the basic demands of the people were fulfilled.

As the police had rejected his representations seeking permission for hunger strike, he moved the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.
