A stone, a slipper and an egg were thrown towards Makkal Needhi Maiam president Kamal Haasan as he was leaving the dais after addressing a meeting at Velayuthampalayam in Aravakurichi Assembly constituency on Thursday night, triggering tension at the venue.

However, the ‘missiles’ did not hit Mr. Haasan, who left the venue safely. When Mr. Haasan was descending from the stage, a couple of persons threw a stone, a slipper and an egg towards him.

The two miscreants, who hurled the ‘missiles’, were nabbed by MNM cadre and police. Chaotic situation prevailed there as some of the MNM cadre alleged that one of the persons who threw the objects was let off by the police, and resorted to a protest.

Karur Superintendent of Police V. Vikraman rushed to the spot, pacified the agitated MNM workers and urged them to disperse.

Earlier, the police arrested 51 Hindu Munnani members for staging a protest against Mr. Haasan’s controversial speech made in Aravakurichi constiutency on Sunday. They were detained at Velayuthampalayam shortly before the arrival of Mr. Hassan for speaking at a public meeting at the same place.
