Struggling for over two hours, a sambar deer, which fell into an open well in Kadamalaikundu, was saved by a team of officials from the forest and fire and rescue services here on Friday.

While farmers in the village were engaged in farming activity, they spotted a sambar deer.

Fearing trouble, the animal panicked and fell into an open well. After the forest personnel were informed, a team led by Sonaimuthu from Megamalai rushed to the spot.

However, as the well did not have any ladder facility, they sought the assistance of fire and rescue personnel from Mayiladumparai.

Soon, the team got into the act and lifted the animal with the help of a huge rope. The operation to save the sambar deer took a little over two hours.

On rescuing, the officials found that the animal had suffered injuries while it fell. After giving treatment at the Manjanoothu forest office, the sambar deer was let off into the Udangal forest area, the officials said.
