A 50-year-old man, running an eatery, was arrested by the Madurai city police on Friday for allegedly raping a nine-year-old girl.

According to the police, the accused K. Nagaraj, a resident of Sonaiya Nagar in Anuppanadi, was misbehaving with the child from the neighbourhood for the past one month.

On Thursday, the accused allegedly took the girl to a secluded place and sexually assaulted her. The girl’s mother and those in the neighbourhood got to know about the incident on hearing the cries of the child, police sources said.

Based on a complaint made by the girl’s mother, the Tirupparankundram All Women Police registered a case under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against Nagaraj and arrested him.
