The Internal Complaints Committee of Madurai Kamaraj University that was enquiring a harassment complaint by a female research scholar against a Professor has completed its enquiries. The committee is expected to submit its report to the Vice-Chancellor latest by Tuesday, sources said.

A full-time research scholar from the Centre for Film and Electronic Media Studies (CFEMS) had filed the complaint against head of the centre and her research guide K. Karnamaharajan. She had blamed the professor of harassing her and demanding to do everything he suggested, including sexual favours, if she needed her Ph. D degree. She also accused him of taking ₹ 2 lakh to admit her as a scholar.

The Professor, however, vehemently denied all the allegations. He claimed that he was being accused for questioning her regular absenteeism and lack of efforts on the research work.

The committee headed V.S. Vasantha, Professor, Department of Chemistry, MKU, conducted three rounds of enquiries with the complainant and the Professor. All the staff members from CFEMS and other persons suggested by the complainant and the Professor were also enquired.

“Both of them presented certain documentary evidence, which were examined by the committee,” a senior official from the university said.

Owing to some members of the committee being on leave, it could not meet last week. Sources said that the committee will meet on Monday to finalise the report and submit it within couple of days.
