The State Government has sanctioned Rs.8.19 crore for constructing 26 check-ams in the district with the objective of enriching groundwater table, District Collector M. Jayaraman has said.
According to a press release, as the rainwater in small rivers and streams drain immediately without giving a chance for increasing the groundwater level, it has been decided to construct 11 check-dams at Chittaar on an outlay of Rs. 4.13 crore and 14 check-dams across the tributaries and streams of Chittaar at a cost of Rs. 1.56 crore.
A major check-dam across Nambiyar will be built at the cost of Rs. 2.50 crore.
“By constructing these check-dams, we can ensure the storage of rainwater at these points during rainy season, which will substantially augment the groundwater level in these regions. Apart from fulfilling irrigation needs of 6,024 acres of lands in Shencottai, Tenkasi, Alangulam, Tirunelveli and Radhapuram blocks, these check-dams will increase water level in the nearby wells and thereby fulfil the drinking water needs,” he said .
