A car reportedly driven by a 15-year-old boy, fatally knocked down an aged woman and left another woman injured in KK Nagar, Madurai on Sunday.
Traffic police said that the women, whose identities are yet to be ascertained, had come to see a relative undergoing treatment in a private hospital. As the tea shop in front of the hospital was closed, the women had gone in search of another shop on the KK Nagar Main Road.
At around 7 a.m., when they were walking along the pavement, a speeding car from behind hit them, in which one of them died on the spot and the other was injured and rushed to a hospital.
Preliminary inquiries suggested that the boy was behind the wheels. But the boy's grandfather, a doctor by qualification, claims to have been behind the wheel and insisted that his grandson was only seated beside him. “Instead of applying the brake, I pressed the accelerator by mistake,” he claimed to the police.
Not convinced, the police are looking for some CCTV grab in the locality. It seems the boy, studying tenth standard in a private school, had even spoken to his friend over mobile phone that he was driving the car.
Further investigation is on.
