2 killed in cracker unit explosion

Two persons were killed and five others sustained injuries in an explosion at a cracker unit at Nandikoil near Maraneri in Virudhunagar district on Tuesday.

According to the police, the accident occurred when workers were removing chemicals from the stock room of the fireworks unit.

The victims were identified as R. Chelladurai (35) of Subramaniapuram and K. Irulandi (40) of Orampatti.

Four of the injured persons have been admitted to the Government Rajaji hospital here for treatment. One more person is undergoing treatment at Government hospital, Sivakasi.

The Maraneri police have registered cases under various Sections of Indian Penal Code and Explosives Act.
