KOCHI: The Hindu in School was launched in 10 more government schools in the city on Wednesday. The scheme had been introduced in 70 schools earlier in this academic year.

The programme aims at inculcating the reading habit among students and to create in them the thirst for knowledge.

The copies, sponsored by the Ernakulam regional office of the Canara Bank under their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, will be distributed in the schools in the city daily throughout the academic year. Mathew Joseph, DGM of Canara Bank, Ernakulam, inaugurated the initiative by handing over the copies to the Principal and students of Govt. Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Ernakulam. The objective of the initiative is to ensure that information is accessible to students of all classes in society. In his address, Mr. Joseph urged the students to make reading a habit which would help them scale greater heights in life. He recalled his childhood days when people used to go to libraries to read and collect information. But these days, students were mostly glued to their television sets, neglecting the need for reading, which was hampering the life of students, he said.

Mr. Joseph announced that Canara Bank would sponsor fans required for the assembly hall in the school as part of the bank’s CSR initiative. Saju Mecheri, AGM, Canara Bank, administered an oath-taking against corruption as part of the observance of the upcoming vigilance week.

Nalina Kumari V., Principal of the school, recalled that she used to get copies of The Hindu only on Sundays during her younger days.
