Confusion prevailed among students who appeared for their second semester improvement examination on Monday after the Mahatma Gandhi University authorities failed to deliver question papers at several centres before the scheduled time.
The Hindu has reliably learnt that students, who appeared for Sanskrit (additional language) examination in a city college, went through some tense moments as they did not receive the question papers for nearly two hours. The exam was supposed to start at 9.30 a.m.
The college authorities confirmed the incident while pointing out that the issue was solved after the university authorities e-mailed the question papers. The question papers were also given by mail to some other examination centres after it was realised that the colleges had not received the hard copies sent by the examination wing.
Principals of affiliated colleges said exam-goof ups at the varsity continued to occur despite several such incidents in the past. Flaws in the delivery of question papers have gone up owing to the lack of an efficient mechanism to ensure timely delivery of the question papers from the varsity headquarters to the colleges concerned.
A city college Principal said the question papers should reach the colleges in sealed covers at least a day before the examination. The rules also stipulate that the varsity should depute its employees to collect the answer sheets once the examination is over.“But there have been several occasions when our staff delivered it to the university,” he said.
The Hindu had earlier reported about similar delays and mix-ups in the conduct of the off-campus examinations of the university. Senior varsity officials had also accepted the delay in the delivery of question papers stating that such mix-ups were common when they were holding thousands of examinations daily.
