Health Minister K.K. Shylaja has said the work on the Kochi Cancer Centre and upgrade of the Government Medical College and the Ernakulam General Hospital will begin in September or October this year.
The tendering process and a detailed project report for the ₹355-crore Kochi Cancer Centre were in the final stages of completion.
The 3-lakh sq ft structure will have 213 beds, four operation theatres and a state-of-the-art infrastructure for comprehensive cancer care with linear accelerators, brachytherapy, bone marrow transplant, and nuclear medicine.
Super-specialty block
The upgrade of the Government Medical College will see a 5.75 lakh sq ft super speciality block with support infrastructure for staff, women’s PG hostel, amenities centre, and indoor stadium-cum- auditorium.
GH upgrade
The General Hospital will get a fully air-conditioned super-specialty block and a cancer block.
There will be 300 more beds once the work is complete.
In Kochi, the Health Minister also announced ‘Mitayi’, an initiative of the Department of Health and Kerala Social Security Mission (KSSM), for better care of children with juvenile diabetes.
