An extension counter of Ernakulam Public Library will be opened at the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) office on Thursday.

The library has been successfully implementing its extension counter system whereby books are taken to the proximity of potential members who are hard-pressed for time to visit the library. A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, Secretary (LSGD – Urban Affairs), will launch the counter at 2.30 p.m. GCDA chairman N. Venugopal will preside and literary critic M.K. Sanoo will deliver the keynote address. Prominent Konkani writer N. Purushothama Mallayya will be honoured at the function.

The library proposes to lend books to potential members in the immediate locality of GCDA office other than members among the GCDA staff, librarian V.G. Ramachandran has said. “The extension counters function for two hours twice in a month,” he said. The new counter at GCDA will function between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

A decision on which day is perfect for the functioning of the counter without affecting employees’ work would be taken shortly.

The other extension counters are at High Court, AKG Library at Chakkaraparambu and Federal Park at Vennala.
