More relief camps opened in Kottayam

Holiday for educational institutions in Kottayam taluk

In a day that witnessed a significant respite from rain, as many as 11 houses were damaged in various parts of the district. According to the district authorities, five houses in the Kanjirappally taluk and six houses in the Changanassery taluk were partially damaged. Since the onset of the monsoon, two houses have been destroyed, while 31 houses have been partially damaged in the district.

Five more relief camps were opened in various parts of the district on Friday. The newly opened camps in the Kottayam taluk are at the Kiliroor U.P. School in Thiruvarpu; Parampuzha Arts and Sports Club in Vijayapuram; Kunathoor Colony in Ayarkunnam; and the Kumarakunnu L.P. School in Arpookkara. In the Meenachil taluk, a camp began functioning at the Pirayaar Government U.P. School in Kidangoor. In all, eight relief camps have been opened in the district so far to relocate those affected in the monsoon.

On account of the monsoon, the District Collector has declared Saturday as holiday for all educational institutions in the Kottayam taluk.

According to official figures, 149 persons belonging to 65 families have been relocated to the relief camps in the district. The District Collector has informed that an estimated total loss of Rs.33.89 lakh has been incurred in the district due to the monsoon as of yet. Agricultural losses have been estimated to be worth Rs.31.73 lakh. Nearly 185.11 hectares of agricultural fields have been damaged, according to the district authorities.

Revenue Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan visited the flood-affected areas and the relief camps.
