The development work at the Government Medical College, Ernakulam, is expected to start on January 1. The Medical College has got the administrative sanction for ₹368 crore.

Other work, such as renovation (₹60 crore), and setting up of Cathlab and imaging centre (₹25 crore) are going on.

Health Minister K.K. Shylaja, who visited the Medical College at Kalamassery on Tuesday, evinced keen interest in knowing about the functioning of the blood bank there.

The facility

The blood bank in the medical college using the enhanced chemiluniniscence serology to screen blood is supposed to reduce the window period for detecting infections to two weeks, according to the blood bank in-charge, Dr. Paul George.

He said the blood bank was able to provide blood to APL patients at ₹200. “Kerala State AIDS Control Society supports the blood bank,” he added.

The Minister also inspected the casualty wing, the ongoing Ardhram work to transform the out-patient wing, renovation of general wards and paediatric ward.
