The special court for the trial of cases relating to atrocities and sexual violence against women and children here on Thursday sentenced a man accused of murdering his six-year-old son to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹10,000.

The convict was identified as Babu, 36, of Vengoor West near Kunnathunadu. He was accused of smothering his son in the early morning hours of September 10, 2016.

Reportedly, the accused, who grew up as an orphan, had made up his mind to end life after he failed to return nearly ₹80,000 he had collected as part of a local chit arrangement. The murder was allegedly motivated by his plan to spare his son the ordeals of being an orphan that he had gone through.

He carried out the act during night when his wife, who works in a private company, was away on night duty.
