Anticipating a heavy monsoon this season, the civic authorities are gearing up to mitigate rain-related hassles to city life.
Health and works standing committees, which have decided to form squads to tackle flooding and waterlogging, will release the contact numbers of squad leaders in a couple of days.
The public can report the incidents of waterlogging and flooding in local areas to the squad leaders.
Following a direction given by the State government, the Health wing of the local body has decided to hold a two-day healthcare campaign on June 2 and 3.
While the first day of the campaign will focus on commercial establishments, the second day will be dedicated for cleanliness drive in households. Joint meetings of residents’ associations, other social organisations and officials of the Health wing were held in this regard, said V.K. Minimol, chairperson of the Health Standing Committee of the civic body.
The collection of non-biodegradable waste from houses have started in the city. The local body would lift the waste collected by residents, she said.
Desilting of canals
On the complaint that desilting of large canals in the city had not begun, Ms. Minimol said instructions had been issued for beginning the work. She said the cleaning of majority of the small drains that run through the city was almost over.
P.M. Harris, chairman of the Works Standing Committee, said the local body decided to skip the desilting of Perandoor canal this season as the work was included under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (Amrut) project. Since the Amrut project included the construction of retaining walls, removal of encroachments and desilting and protection of the canal, it would be a futile exercise to invest in it, he said.
Though the Corporation council, which met on Saturday, decided to postpone the clearance for the project, it could be taken up in the next meeting, he said.
