The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team probing the nurses’ recruitment scam on Monday arrested L. Adolphus, Protector of Emigrants (PoE), Kochi, for allegedly abetting the extortion of money by Al Zarafa Travel and Manpower Consultants from nursing recruits to Kuwait.

“Despite being arraigned as a key accused in as many as four cases, the PoE was still found acting hand in glove with the various recruitment agencies. In the latest instance, he was found supporting the Kochi-based PBS consultancy, an agency that has been carrying out overseas recruitment of nurses without a valid licences,” said a top CBI official.

Based on the finding, the PoE was arrested from his office on Monday afternoon. He is slated to be produced in the CBI court on Tuesday.

“We will be seeking his custody for a couple of days more so as to interrogate him further and  ascertain the roles   of others involved in the scam,’’ the official added.

As per the case, Al Zarafa levied service charges of around Rs.19.5 lakh from each candidate as against the stipulated fee of Rs.19,500.

Even though several complaints had been filed against the travel agency with the PoE, the official did not act and even sent copies of the complaints to the agency.
