The University of Hyderabad (UoH) has made a rapid stride up in the QS World University Rankings, by figuring in 591-600 range when compared to last year’s position in the range of 601 and 650.

According to the latest report released by QS on Thursday, UoH figured among the top 59% in the QS World University Rankings. Considering there are about 26,000 universities globally, this makes UoH one of the top 2.3% universities in the world, according to a statement released by the varsity.

For the first time, UoH has been included in the QS World Rankings-2018. Till 2017, it was being ranked only in three subjects – English, chemistry and physics.

Academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, student to faculty ratio, international faculty and international students are the parameters based on which the university has been ranked by the QS.

Also, IIT-Bombay has improved its position from 179 to 162 this year, while the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, has moved to 170th rank from 190. IIT-Kanpur has moved up to 283 from 293 last year, while IIT-Kharagpur is now at 295 compared to 308 the previous year.

IIT-Roorkee has also improved from 431-440 range to 381,while IIT-Guwahati has pushed its position up to 472 from 501-550 range last year.

At 300 globally, the citations per faculty indicator is the strongest for the UoH. As per QS, 3,612 research papers have been published by its faculty between 2011 and 2016 and they have a total citation of 23,535.

The university has also performed exceptionally well both in India, and at the global level, in the citations per faculty indicator, as well as in the faculty-student ratio.

At the global level, it has a score of 58.1 to the global median of 34.1 in the citations per faculty criteria, while it has a score of 8.8 to the global median of 8.0 in the faculty-student ratio.

Appa Rao Podile, Vice-Chancellor of UoH, said the ranking definitely puts more pressure on the institution to better its performance and achieve higher standards. He congratulated all the faculty, students, staff, and alumni for the achievement.

Indian varsities have seen a positive performance this year. While 24 universities feature from India, seven improved their rank, nine remained stable, five were newly-ranked and only three saw their position drop.

The achievement could be primarily attributed to the improvements in the QS’ reputational indicator, which accounts for the insights of 83,000 academics and 42,000 employers.
